Wine cellars are specially designed rooms for keeping the wine at a perfect temperature and position. In wine companies, it is where the wine is left to age, and in private houses, this rooms stores the wines that are ready to be drunk and in their respective bottles.
The quality and materials chose for the wine cellars influences directly in the final quality of the wine. Ventilation and moister control are also extremely important. But nothing is more important than controlling the eventual pests that can be present.
Since temperature control is one the most important feature, most of these wine cellars are built underground. This facilitates the work mostly for rats and mice that are mostly in underground environments.
Most common pests on wine cellars
Cockroaches: They carry diseases with them plus they can defecate near or on the wine bottles. Should this happen, bottles should be disinfected before drinking and still it may not be enough and throwing them away may be the only option.
Flies and Moths: Since they like the room temperature of wine cellars they can also be harmful to the environment.
Rats and mice: By far the biggest enemies as they love the wood design of wine cellars and they carry very dangerous diseases. Major loss has been documented on even the best wine cellars in the world. The main problem is that anything that enters into contact with rats or mice should be thrown away as they can transmit very dangerous disease for humans.
For mice and rats, there is a big problem when trying to control them. A pest control based on chemical fluids is not an option for two reasons. First, they can be harmful and toxic for the winds, and second, they can lure and kill the rats and mice leaving their dead bodies around the wine cellar which is even worst.
That is why wine cellars use mostly adhesive lures that will leave the rat or mice glue to them when they enter into contact with them. This way they do not die when caught and they reduce the possibility of breeding of these species.
The new technology on repelling mice and rats is the ultrasound repeller. This device produces a sound that is extremely annoying for rats, and it is not hearable by the human ear. Thus it keeps the pests away. It is very efficient, even in large spaces and it has no harms for humans or other pets. However, it does not kill the mice and rats it only keeps them away.
